TRL's Traffic and Network software include products that are industry standards in the traffic and transportation field. They are complemented by new and innovative software solutions designed to maximise productivity.

TRANSYT determines optimum fixed-time co-ordinated traffic signal timings in any network. It is suitable for use in urban centres, extended networks, signalised roundabouts and motorway junctions - indeed, for any network of roads for which the average traffic flows are known.  Its use around the world reflects its international appropriateness.  The latest version (TRANSYT 13) represents the biggest step-change in the product's history, in terms of functionality and investment by TRL.

MOVA is a control system for traffic light signals at isolated junctions. It intelligently switches between delay-minimising and capacity-maximising modes, depending on traffic demand. Currently the UK is thought to have at least 3000 sites equipped with MOVA, with each year seeing at least another 200 installations.

SCOOT is an urban traffic control system that controls signals in networks of junctions. It is adaptive and responds automatically to traffic fluctuations, making it particularly effective in areas where traffic flows are unpredictable. It is now used in over 170 towns and cities in the UK and overseas.

MTV is a visualisation tool designed for traffic researchers to analyse traffic patterns and automatic signal settings on motorways. MTV takes data, signal alerts, and motorway geometry, processes the data and produces detailed graphical outputs.

CONTRAM models traffic in road networks over time. It uses a dynamic assignment model to assign traffic to minimum cost routes, to produce a full description of flows, delays, queues and journey times. It can also model unexpected situations such as incidents.

BUNDLE is a suite of four programs for PDAs, useful to the traffic engineer when on-street. It includes functions to record traffic counts and proportions, to measure saturation flows and signal lags, to measure cruise speeds and to produce cyclic flow profiles. The accompanying PC software can be used to view, analyse and archive the data.

SISTM is a micro-simulation tool owned by the Highways Agency for modelling traffic management strategies on motorways. It can be used for evaluating the effects of different measures including ramp metering, variable speed limits and dedicated lanes as well as geometric and O/D demand changes. It produces output on vehicle journey times, queue lengths, exhaust emissions and noise levels.
